The 928 was the Porsche that was designed and developed to show the world what Porsche was capable of, and when introduced the Porsche Management Team's plan was to replace the then aging 911 with this all new 928. The 928 was a true Rock Star in it's era, and the well moneyed Executive's Transportation of choice. It was designed by the best and the brightest automotive engineering talent of the day and built to a standard well above the industry norm. Developments costs for the 928 were astronomical, but it all made sense as Porsche at this time was on top of the world, yet still reaching for the stars, and they choose the 928 to be rocket ship to take them there.
The 928 was never a normal car, it was built to be something very special and now here we are more than four decades after it's first introduction and the 928 remains truly special indeed.
Of course we now all have some understanding that Porsche's original plans for the 928 didn't quite pan out as they had hoped, given that the 911 actually proved to be impossible to kill. The 928 showed itself to be just a tad less of the sports car than the market at the time demanded, as it was more of a Bahn Burning, Grand Touring car of the highest order. The 928 throughout it's long production history proved itself to be a true Automotive 'Tour de Force', very special in it's own right, but yet something significantly different than it's 911 stablemate.
The 'S' variant, as on offer here, wore new front and rear spoilers and sported wider wheels and tires than the older variants, but the main change for the 928 S was under the hood, where a revised 4.7 L engine was used. These cars used Bosch LH-Jetronic fuel injection system and purely electronic Bosch ignition, the same systems used on the later 32-valve cars,. North American-spec 1983 and 1984 S models (like this car) used among other differences, smaller valves, milder camshafts, smaller diameter intake manifolds, and additional pollution equipment in order to meet the N.A. emissions regulations of the day, resulting in a power output of 237 PS (234 hp). All said not a massive amount of power, but for it's day was still darn quick with Car & Driver Magazine reporting a 0-60mph at 6.2 and a 143 mph top speed.
As a result of these enhancements the 928 S finally returned the model back to the performance offered by the first, the original 928 that had been introduced in 1978 with what was now virtually the same 240hp (Euro Models) & 3200lbs weight.. Now we are well aware that this S Variant is not the ultimate 928, as those higher powered models would come into the market much later in the cars history. That said there can be no denying that this now 36 year old piece of Porsche Treasure remains a fabulous example of Automotive Performance Art. Yes we all know that the 911s of that era were a wee bit more tactile and a touch quicker, but truly not by much given that the 84/911 had just 200hp and weighed in at 2800lbs.
The 928 would never become a 911, but the 911 has slowly over the decades become more and more like the 928,... more luxury, more refinement, and certainly a bit more Grand Touring than pure sports car! it once was.
Why A Porsche 928
As you may or not know we at SportsCarLocate have been chasing Porsche cars for our clients for over a decade now, and although we have successfully located far more 911s than 928s we have never turned our eyes away from the 928 marketplace.
You might ask us why, given that most of our clients are seeking 911s, and I would tell that I have loved the 928 from the day that I were first introduced to the model by the likes of Road & Track and Car & Driver way back in the mid 70's. Through all the years of the many ups and down experienced by this unique breed of Porsche; the often overstated horror stories of ownership, the crash and burn of values, the constant barrage of adverts offering cheap, neglected, deferred maintenance 928 project cars... I have never been able to shake my lust for the 928. I must also share that the more I age (no spring chicken here) the more this Porsche model speaks to me. Less about the rush of speed and more about the full automotive experience. For me the 928 remains a near unmatched blend of classical yet shockingly modern lines, Teutonic design sensibilities, rational comfort and usable performance.
Yes there were then, and there will always be faster, more furious means of travelling down the road, but few in my mind have ever successfully achieved what Porsche brought to the marketplace with the introduction of the 928 way back in the 70's.
After a lengthy period of disregard the 928 now continues to show a strong resurgence in interest from enthusiasts worldwide, hence the value appreciation over the past decade and the strong market interest in worthy examples. Interestingly over the years as these cars aged and were eventually passed down to youthful sports focused buyers the most desired examples were those with a Manual Transmission. The intrinsic nature and Porsche's original intent when bringing the 928 to market are somewhat at odds with this new age focus on pure performance. The 928 has always been about finding the balance between performance, ease of operation and comfort, being less focused on pure performance and instead directed at those seeking easily accessible levels of performance. It has been reported that near 85-90% of all 928s were produced with what was then the state of the art Automatic Transmission. Somewhat surprisingly not much different than the situation we see with the modern era 911 given that 90% of buyers are selecting their 911's with the Automated PDK transmission over the shift it yourself manual versions.
So yes although many of us Porsche enthusiasts love a stick-shift 911, the passing of time and changing of trends should tell us that the original purchasers of 928s didn't actually go too far wrong when they ordered their 928s with a auto transmission. That said many experienced automotive reviewers over the years reported their preference for the autobox 928, often because they simply felt that this transmission stole little from the actual performance potential of the car and it was decidedly the most appropriate transmission for the 928 given the car's Grand Touring focus and intention.

This car is currently with it's owner, garaged and cloistered away from the elements. Reassuring is the reality that every aspect mentioned in the Things to Look For Section have been addressed on this very rarely found, fully sorted 928. Like near any 36 year old vehicle this 928 had needs when it initially came into the sellers hands, but unlike many that purchase these ageing Porsches, this owner spent his energy, time and a good wack of dollars to go through the car and make it right.
The seller's description of his time with the car. speaks volumes...
"I have had the car for three years. Drives great. when I got it it had minor right front damage. Bumper had paint damage and the inside driver's light was broken. I had the bumper repainted, the light repaired, and I filled in the front license plate brackets. New OEM front lower spoiler done as well.
I had the undercarriage treated with dry ice and it is like new. No rust, and now beautiful underneath.
There was a small spot of rust on the passenger rear window trim about the size of your finger nail. I had the rear window removed and the rust taken out with fresh metal welded in. Modern Autobody in Edmonton did the work (Porsche OEM Repair Centre). Front Bumper and rust (on rear window trim) removal .
Also had motor mounts done, the air conditioning fixed, and blue tooth sound system installed,. New tires, wheel alignment, had brakes checked, new windshield and then I put a special 3M on it to protect it. New wipers, front and rear hood and trunk struts, Minor anti freeze leak fixed etc.
I have a full list of repairs. H20 pump and timing belt done about two years ago. Car runs beautifully. It is a nice driver and I would not hesitate to drive it to Mexico tomorrow. It consumes absolutely no oil. This car turns heads and sounds UNBELIEVABLE.!
Had her out on a 500 kilometer and 300 scoot with the Porsche boys, and the 700 kilometer run with a friend in his Mustang GT500 KR. He was shocked how well this car kept up with him… especially in the corners.
The topper on the cake for this owner was the fact that this car was chosen by his PCA peers as the winner of the Peoples Choice Awards at the socially distanced, 2020 Online Concours Event.
This is a uniquely nice, true survivor that has been preened and coddled - a 928 that has been driven, and fully enjoyed, yet unlike many, it remains up and ready for more of the same in it's nest lover's hands.

For the current owner of this treasure, it is not a car he actually wishes to release from his possession, but like many of us that play with cars, he has gone beyond the limit of his storage capacity, too many toys and simply not enough time and space to keep and enjoy them all.
I would highly recommend that you take the time to look at the various imaging provided by the seller on this very impressive 928 'S'. Inside, outside, the engine bay and even the underside of this example is simply not the norm that you'll find, when you start seriously chasing a 928.
If you have like me longed for a Porsche 928 over the years, or if you have more recently acquired a lust for what is undeniable one of Porsche's best efforts I highly recommend that you reach out to dig deeper and learn more. I have got to say that I am falling for this 928 and I may be pushed to pull the trigger on this one myself, if I can find the space.
My personal view is that this car is actually significantly under valued as priced at just $23,500 CAD (approx. $18,150. USD with today's exchange), A true opportunity for buyers on either side of the border. Please take the time to compare the other often cheaper 928s languishing around the marketplace, as unlike those cars this is not a 928 that is suffering from extended neglect, and deferred maintenance. Trust me when I say that taking those cars up to the standard set by this one, will prove to be a very painful and shockingly costly process.
