Porsche’s 930 was quick to acquire its truly ICONIC status soon after it's initial introduction at the Paris Auto Show in 1974, and it has rightfully held its status as an automotive icon right up until the current day. Very few cars have been successful at retaining their iconic status a full half century after their initial introduction, but the Porsche 930 is without doubt, one of those very rare pieces. As such it has continued to hold it's exulted position within the Top-Tier of Automotive Treasure. The 930... true keeper if ever their were one!
Porsche through the 1970s & 80s was at the zenith of their Motorsport domination, and if anyone at the time understood motorsports, performance and turbochargers it was Porsche. The 930 was not your normal production car as it instead was born out of Porsche's racing program and a desire to continue to compete and win in Motorsport. To do so, the FIA Homologation Requirements of the day, required Porsche to built a minimum number of production units (Street Cars), so that Porsche's 930/934 racing cars would be permitted to compete.
At that time the technology transfer between Porsche's Race Cars and 930 Turbo was undeniable and direct with much of the technology that found its way into the 930 being derived from the Porsche 917 Program, one of the most dominant Porsche Race Cars ever constructed.
Once introduced the 930 was road tested by the leading Automotive Magazine of the day... Road & Track called it “the car every Porsche fanatic would mortgage his soul to Stuttgart to own.” Motor said it was “the finest driving machine you can buy,” and Car and Driver called it “a Panzer among Porsches, a street racer that will guarantee you a place at the top of the pecking order in a way that not even a Ferrari or a Lamborghini can.”
The Porsche 930 was, with out any doubt a True Supercar, yet it was a car that retained the roomy comfort, and reliability of a 911, all of which was very unlike the other difficult and temperamental Supercars of the day. The 930 dominated the Supercar marketplace just as it's derivatives the 934/935's dominated motorsports for years to come.
In the end a little over 23,000 930s were produced by Porsche, over a 15 year production run, which of course helped pad Porsche's books, allowing them to continue the development of their 930 derived racers the 934/935, and maintain their dominance in motorsports. Notable is the reality that just half of the 930's production made it into North America, and today, given the life of the average 930, so many decades later, you have wonder just how few, of the true great ones remain.
Yes, the 930 proved itself in the showroom and on the tracks worldwide, a triumph in automotive design, and as such the 930 remains as it should at the pinnacle of desire for anyone seeking a Porsche from the Air Cooled Era!
Global demand for this unique Porsche model remains very strong, and we see no reason for that to change in the years to come as market interest in the thrill inducing, driving experience that these cars provide would appear to be creating an unquenchable thirst for ownership, amongst knowing enthusiasts.
Lou’s Stunning 1986 Porsche 930 Coupe
An original U.S. Delivered example, not one of those, questionable Grey Market cars... California Emission Compliant
Factory Sport Seats are far rarer than you many think in the 930 Turbo as many of them left the factory with your base Carrera seat. Power Seats Too!
Limited Slip Differential, a virtual must have when you are trying to put the power down in a 930, but more often than not this option was left off of the list. Not this one!
This car is on offer from it's private, long term owner Lou C, a Porsche enthusiast who keeps a number or Porsche 911's in his small stable of cars. Lou purchased this 930 direct from it's past private owner back in 2015 @ #miles.
Having owned the car for the past decade, Lou has never been shy about treating this 930 right, investing significant funds with a veritable 'Open Wallet' at his local Porsche Specialist shops to ensure the car always had it's maintenance up to date, and ready to be driven whenever the whim to drive it struck him. In fact a review of the service invoices for Lou's 10 year ownership period reveal that Lou has invested $34,000 in mechanical service and repair. That said the car was driven sparingly with just XXXmiles being added by Lou through the years, yet not a car ever left ignored or unused.
Lou has now made the decision to release his 930 back into the public pool so that the next enthusiast in line gets a opportunity to enjoy this true treasure of a car.
This is one of the few, now all too rarely available, 'ORIGINAL' 930 Coupes that were Delivered into North America by Porsche! Wonderfully to my mind, as the car is a virtual factory virgin, with near all its original factory equipment in place - with modifications limited to the the Steering Wheel , with the original wheel being provided with the car.
The car had clearly received lots of love and attention by all it's former owners as it is still wearing what is believed to be near all of it's Original Factory Paint, along with its still immaculate Factory Leather Interior. Yes, if you look close you may find a very light touch of, to be expected, Patina as the car is 39 years old. That said the car shows near shockingly beautiful from any angle.
It is undeniably, a very well-preserved example, with reportedly zero corrosion/rust, past or present, to be found. Looking over the detailed images there is very little doubt that this car has spent the vast majority of it's life in a garage, hidden away from the damaging elements. And that reality becomes even more apparent, when you review the underside of this car... as impressively factory original as you would hope for any 'Unrestored' example. This in itself is a triumph as very few 930 Turbo have made to this age without undergoing significant restoration... in the Porsche World 'Original' is always best!
The car has a a Unblemished History from new, with no known past accidents, an unblemished CarFax Report along with a fresh Professional Inspection of the Body & Chassis to back these statements up!
Since Lou's acquisition in 2015 he has shown the car some serious love, continuing to service the car regularly at talented local Air Cooled Specialist, and it is clear that Lou has never ignored the car's needs, having investing heartily in it's continued care. Invoices are available.
This my friends is not always the reality, especially for a 930, and not often the norm with many owners and their aging Porsches!
SportsCarSellers V-Consign program provides enthusiast owners a unique platform to offer their automotive treasures for sale DIRECT to legitimate buyers, without investing the endless hours. inviting the significant risks and enduring many annoyances normally associated with a private party vehicle sales. You the owner sells the car while we provide Professional Marketing Assistance...
Importantly in June 2025, in anticipation of this sale, Lou invested in a comprehensive review of this 930 by one of the leading local Porsche 930 Specialist.
The review was completed by Grant Kaepplinger a long renowned Porsche Technician with a unique world class knowledge and understanding of the 930 cars. Grant developed his insight into the 930 over his decades of past employment with some of the worlds most recognizable names in Porsche Racing back in the heyday of the 930... Andial Racing & Vasek Polak Racing. Hence, Grant knows the 930 breed like few others!
Both of these shops were based in California, but known and respected across the globe, having been true leaders and innovators in the development of Porsche's racing dominance.
If you have been on the hunt, you'll know that there is a serious supply shortage of these uniquely desirable 'Virtually Original', 930 Coupes in the market. That is especially true of 930 of this caliber. This car's current cosmetic condition, factory originality and its owner's significant maintenance regime have helped it to near totally belie its age.
As you may or may not be aware, we at SportsCarLocate have been chasing Porsche cars on behalf of our clients for the past 17 years now, and through those years we have successfully located 911s from every era, including those from the Pinnacle 930's period.
Throughout those many years we have seen the market for Porsche’s Air Cooled cars change dramatically, with enthusiasts worldwide coming to the realization that the 911 from these early eras were uniquely magical, melodious motorcars, the likes of which, would never be produced ever again.
Air Cooled demand and values peaked and then peaked again and again, as the marketplace could never be fully sated, given the limited availability of quality examples. This was and remains particularly the case, for the 930 era cars, as although original production numbers were significant, many of these cars over the decades found uncaring owners, were, more often than not, over modified or otherwise abused, and due to the inexperience of their owners, many 930's also came to an untimely death, destroyed by unplanned, violent off road adventures.
This unique breed of the Porsche 911, the 930, is for most knowing Porsche focused enthusiasts, a car that sits at the high water mark of driver engagement. These are cars that need to be Actually Driven - as there are no aids, no babysitters and nothing to get in the way of you the driver, and your respectful awareness of just what the 930 is capable of. The 930 will forever be desired for their uniquely raw analogue nature, a car that, right up until this day, evokes a visceral response unlike near anything else on the road!
The 930 Coupe is undeniably a feast for the eyes and a sonorous blessing for the ears, but far more than that, it is to my mind a true Sanctuary For The Enthusiast's Soul. Blissful excess, that commands your undivided attention and respect!
Yes, the 930, over the years, has proven itself to be somewhat of a reliable Automotive Investment Vehicle, but for me, and for many of my clients, automotive ownership is far more about making an investment in one's personal joy, than it is about making a few bucks. Money comes and money goes, but the untold rewards found at the wheel of a 930 in full song, on that next piece of winding road, in the end, speaks far louder to our shared enthusiast's spirit than a plus or minus on the balance sheet ever could.
The 930... A Therapist's Couch on four wheels!
Singer has for a number of years now has been buying up aging Porsche Air Cooled cars (964 models in particular) and 'Reimagining'/Modifying them to reflect the Air Cooled 911's from Porsche yet dressed up to make them something different. Singer spends significantly in their production units and hence they never come cheap, with most leaving Singer's California facility with price tags well in excess of $1M USD.
Singer has since veered of their original course and they are now 'Reimagining' the 930 Turbo cars. Fast and furious they may be, but at the end of the day do these cars really add that much to the Original 930 Story?
