1990 Porsche 964 C2 Coupe

Private Owner/Seller - Thomas P.

165k Kilometers - (100k miles)

3.6L 247 HP - 5 Speed Manual

Seller's Ask: $125,500 CAD - Current Equivalent $94,500 USD

Marvelous, magical, memorable is how we would describe the next owner's first, and for that matter, each consequent drive, as Porsche's 964 was designed and developed to not just push the 911 forward in time, but to also stay true to Porsche's already glorious past. Hence each and every drive has the potential to turn into a near unforgettable event... not just an Air Cooled feast for the ears, but a purely joyful full on sensory reawakening.

Notably unlike virtually every other vehicle manufacturer, Porsche was never a company focused on the 'All New' and instead invested the companies engineering talent and financial recourses in 'Careful Constant Improvement', but the 964 Model was different, as times were a changing, and Porsche's focus on the past was catching up on itself.

The then well dated 911 platform of the 80's was ready for a major redesign and Porsche was being pushed by the fresh marketplace competition that was coming from both it's European competitors, and the new kids on the block, the then technologically advanced, Japanese manufacturers!

Earlier in the 80's, Porsche had invested a massive amount of money and engineering talent in it's low volume, race bred, pure exotic the 959 and it was now primetime to capitalize on this investment, hence the 964/911 was designed to take advantage of many of the lessons learned from the 959's production.  A New & Much Improved 911 was the end result and it is not surprising to now learn that the lead designer for Porsche's 964, Benjamin Dimson, was also a senior designer on the 959 project.

First introduced in 1989 as the 964 '4' AWD the 964 was heralded by pundits around the world as a near all new and better 911, and new it was as Porsche reported that 85% of the car was in fact new. The 964/911 was virtually a clean sheet design that finally brought the Porsche 911 into the modern era.

A car that was reminiscently styled to reflect the traditions of the early 911s, but under the somewhat familiar skin laid a significantly stiffer structure, a completely new suspension system, brakes that push the envelop and for the first time in a 911 'ABS' and Air Bags. The piece d' resistance, was the new (massive for the time) Air Cooled, Twin Plug 3.6L H6, which offered a hefty boost in Horsepower and Torque over the old 3.2 Carrera Engine.

Differences between the 3.2 Carrera and the 964 Carrera were everywhere, both visible and invisible, similar but yet oh so different and all said it just simply felt so good, while looking oh so right... the 964 soon took the market by storm... Porsche's 911 was back with a vengeance and in time even the diehard Porsche Traditionalists learned to love the car.

964 Love turned to unmitigated LUST when some years back a small firm in California wisely choose the model to base it's 'Reimagined 911' on and the rest is history. Singer's work caught the eye and the imagination of Porsche enthusiasts across the globe. Porsche's 964 was suddenly seen in a very different light, which in turn led to a dramatic rediscovery of the car's many attributes. Attributes that for so many Porsche Enthusiasts had been long ago been forgotten.

Ownership worthy, examples of these now treasured cars, the very desirable RWD 964 C2 Coupes in particular, have become so few and far between that the trickle of stock available in the marketplace tends to find buyers quickly. 964 Production numbers were relatively small and as much of the production was assigned to the many, now less desirable variants... the C4s, the Tiptronic Transmission Cars and the Cabriolets, there are simply too few C2 Manual Coupes available to meet current market demand.

Global demand for this unique Porsche model remains very strong, and we see no reason for that to change in the years to come as market interest in the thrill inducing, uniquely analogue driving experience that these cars provide would appear to be creating an unquenchable desire amongst knowing enthusiasts. The 964 C2 Coupes are special and the Porsche Enthusiast world knows it!

Now if you have never taken a sip of the Porsche's 'Kool-Aid' we understand that you may still simply not get the sense of lust and desire that these now Classic 964/911s generate in the marketplace. All said folks I am not going to attempt to bring you on board or convert you to the Porsche Faith, but if you are one of the true believers, this is one of those rare moments in time that you'll want to  look up, listen intently, and follow your hearts desire!

    Can Buying a 964 C2 Make Sense

As you may or may not be aware we at SportsCarLocate have been chasing Porsche cars on behalf of our clients for over a decade now, and subsequently we have successfully located 911s from every era, but for quite some time now we have observed the increasing demand and desire for the 964 cars, in particular the C2/Manual Coupes. So much so, the demand more often than not far exceeded our ability to source purchase worthy examples for our clients.

Although over the years we sourced quite a few 964 candidates, in actuality most failed our quality standards and hence these cars were never shared with, nor purchased by. our clients. Disappointing clients is never good for business, but the realities of the 964 market required us to suck it up and take it on the chin, so to speak.

These are sports cars that do just about everything well... yes, a touch of a understatement here, as these cars were, in their day, 'World Class' and with the right driver at the wheel, capable of embarrassing near anything on the road.

Performance has rarely been a question when you are talking 911's, no matter the era, as performance is the bedrock of the Porsche Brand, but these 964 C2's helped redefine what a Traditionally Styled Carrera could provide and today, maybe even more so than when new, these cars offer their owners so much more than what a bunch of simplistic performance numbers can describe.

This unique breed of Carrera, for most knowing Porsche focused enthusiasts, sits at the high water mark of driver engagement, and they are treasured for their unique combination of modern era technology and purely analogue nature, characteristics capable of evoking a visceral response unlike near anything else on the road today!

Clearly you will find many cars in the modern era that are significantly faster than these 30+ year old Porsche 964s, but as the performance numbers head into the stratosphere for many enthusiasts the numbers and the cars have become less and less relevant in today's world.

The 964 Coupe is undeniably a feast for the eyes and a sonorous blessing for the ears, but far more than that, it is to my mind a true Sanctuary For The Enthusiast's Soul.

Yes, the 964 over the years has proven itself to be somewhat of a reliable Automotive Investment Vehicle, but for me, and for many of my clients, automotive ownership is far more about making an investment in personal joy than it is about making a few bucks. Money comes and money goes, but the untold rewards found at the wheel of a 964 in full song, on that next piece of twisted pavement, in the end, speaks far louder to our shared enthusiast's spirit than a plus or minus on the balance sheet ever could.

    SportsCarSellers - Private Party Sale

This car is on offer from it's private owner Thomas P., a Porsche enthusiast, a PCA Member and now after 8 years of 964 ownership a committed Air Cooled lover. Interestingly, Thomas initially tested the Porsche waters with the ownership of a Cayman, before falling under the spell of this simply gorgeous 964.

This is one of the few, now exceedingly rare, 964' C2 Manual Coupes that were Originally Delivered into Canada by Porsche! Wonderfully to my mind, the car is a virtual factory virgin with near all of its original factory equipment in place - no silly modifications on this beauty. And in the end with all Porsches, originality is ultimately where the value lies!

Purchased locally by Thomas from a fellow PCA Member back in 2014 the car has been under his respectful care for the past 8 years. The car had clearly received lots of love and attention by all of it's former owners as it is still wearing what is believed to be most, if not all, of it's Original Factory Paint. and good Lord see looks good! With a desire to protect it's originality Thomas, soon after his purchase, invested in a Professional 3-stage Polish/Colour-Correction along with the application of Xpel Film Protection on Hood/Fenders/Mirrors/Bumper. As can been seen by the supplied images the results of this effort has paid huge dividends as the car continues to look stunning.

Yes, of course at 165k km/100k miles, on very close examination, some minor flaws in the original paintwork can be found as Thomas reports that there are a couple of blemishes/nicks, and there are some smaller scrapes on the front bumper.  The common 964 issue with the faded/fogged tail light housing is present on the car, but easily corrected. The Cup Rims are also showing some minor paint chipping, but little to no curbing damage, and not that they need it, but the rims is desired are easily restored.

That said it is undeniably a very well preserved example, with reportedly zero corrosion/rust past or present to be found. This in itself is a bit of a triumph as these 964s are known to develop areas of corrosion. With little doubt further evidence that the car was likely always garage kept and winter stored throughout it's life.

A knowledgeable buyer, prior to purchase, Thomas carefully reviewed the documents of past service and found that the car had been well cared for throughout its life, most recently by his local area Porsche Specialist, with some significant and costly work completed, while in the past owners' hands including a Top End Engine Rebuild at around 140k kilometers.

The car has a Pristine History from new, with no known past damage or accidents and an unblemished CarFax Report to back it up!

Since Thomas' acquisition in 2014 he has shown the car some serious love, continuing to service the car regularly at his local Air Cooled Specialist, and it is clearly evident that Thomas has never ignored the car's needs, investing heartily in it's continued care. This my friends is not always the reality, and not often the norm with owner's and their aging 911s!

This car is currently with it's private owner, garaged and cloistered away from the elements, under cover. This is a car that has been enjoyed, yet driven sparingly, and never left ignored... important as 911s like to get out on the road and hate to be left unused. Not every Classic 964 received the kind of respect that this has had throughout its life, and the difference between a sheltered, yet active example, and one that was overused, abused or ignored is very telling.

    The Opportunity

If you have been on the hunt, you'll know that there is a serious supply shortage of these uniquely desirable 964 C2/Manual Coupes in the current market. Interest remains extremely strong and we see significant potential for not just continued interest, but increased market demand in the years to come.

When you do look around the market you soon realize that very few of these cars have made it this far in the overall impressive, well sorted, condition that you will find this one to be. This car's current cosmetic condition, factory originality and its significant mechanical refreshments help it to near totally belie it's age and accumulated mileage.

If you know the market well you will be very well aware that 964s for many years languished in the Porsche Market, unloved by many, and misunderstood by most. These cars more often than not found owners that did not at the time have the financial means to address the car's needs... this is not one of those car!

A very tough car to match in Canada the U.S. or abroad, as unlike oh so many 964s, this car has greatly benefited from the respect and care it has been shown by each of its owners. Never abused, never ignored, never left wanting for love, and unlike so many 964s there is a complete paper trail to back up this statement.

To say that this Classic 911 is the 'Complete Package' is a bit of an understatement.

Yes, as all Porsche 911s should be, this car has been regularly exercised with love and respect (not tracked), but it has also been coddled since birth by each and every owner, serviced religiously, refreshed mechanically as needed (no matter the expense) and driven with restraint as the mileage accumulated represents just 5,156 kilometers (3200 miles) per each year it has been on the road.

    Our Thoughts

    An Investment Worthy Keeper!

Is it perfect... well as they say "perfection is in the eye of the beholder", but at 32 years of age and with 165k km/100k miles on the odometer, if you were expecting pure perfection I can say that you may be disappointed. That said this is a truly special example, an exceedingly well preserved original that we believe will not just thrill and impress it's next owner, but excite all those that it passes by.

We have been professionally chasing down all manner of 911s, on behalf of our rightfully picky clients, for going on 13 years now, and we feel very comfortable here in reporting that this is an extremely fine 'High Quality Driver' example that we are sure will prove itself to be a real find for any knowledgeable Air Cooled Porsche Enthusiast.

As perfectly imperfect as it may be, the Car is Undeniably Perfect for what Porsche designed the 964/911 to be... 'The Ultimate Driver'

As currently priced by the seller, this very tough to find 964 '2' Coupe certainly represents what we see as more than fair value in today's market.   We welcome your comparisons, in fact we want you to review and compare this against any and all of the other Carrera '2' Coupes you can find out in the marketplace.  We are confident that when you look at all of the key factors of Classic 911 Values -  originality, past history, accumulated mileage, current actual condition and recent investments in rebuilds along with this car's lifetime of maintenance... we believe that you will then better understand our view on the car's market value.

Buyer's Opportunity... you bet it is! Just try and find another with all of these attributes at this price point! So, no matter what side of the border you happen to reside, or in fact wherever in the world you may be based, you need to sit up, take notice and respond fast!

Trust me when I say that taking many of those other 964s up to the standard set by this one, will prove to be a surprisingly costly experience. This not a Porsche that suffers from extended neglect and deferred maintenance issues!

One of Porsche's best efforts, with traditional, now classic 911 lines in combination with a touch of mechanical modernity that takes these Air Cooled cars to another level.

Give us a call or connect by email to discuss this opportunity further.  U.S. and International Buyers take note as given the cars age (30+), and originality it is now an easy export to near any region of the world.
