The long storied Porsche 911 Turbo, a true Automotive Icon, the favored poster art of multiple generations and as such a model that is both known across the globe and highly desired by enthusiasts everywhere. First introduced to the market way back in the mid seventies, the 911 Turbo has for well over four decades remained at the pinnacle of motoring performance. Each era from the first 930s to the latest 992 Turbo have proven themselves time and again to be unimaginably fast, and supremely competent sports cars capable of near other worldly levels of performance.
Today's Turbo offering, a super fine 996 era example comes courtesy of it's enthusiast private owner Nadim, a long time, multiple 911 owner, and a great SportsCarLocate client. We assisted Nadim in sourcing this car some 3 years ago direct from an Authorized Porsche Dealer who had at the time recently taken it on trade.
These 996 era Turbo cars, like all of the 911 Turbo variants were shockingly fast when first introduced and yet for the 996 Turbo possibly even more surprising than it's initial performance is it's ongoing ability to run strong and hard with the fast pack now 20 years after it's introduction. That said supercar performance is just one of the 996 Turbo's star attributes as unlike near anything else in the automotive world the 996 Turbo is renowned for it's incredible reliability and it's unique capability to function without complaint as a four season, everyday driver.
The current market has been kind to the 996 Turbo and through the years after a shortened period of value depreciation the 996 Turbo has proven itself to be a near guaranteed Future Classic, a car widely loved by a growing legions of knowledgeable Porsche enthusiasts. Desirable to say the least, yet gaining access to worthy examples, of this object of automotive desire, has become surprisingly difficult as those that have acquired them, now have little interest in letting them go.
Go ahead, look around the various marketplaces on either side of the border and you'll soon realize that the good ones are now very few and far between. The availability of true 'Keeper Worthy' examples... Original, Unmodified, Low Mileage, Clean History 'Manual Transmission' 996 Turbo Coupes has shrunk to an all time low as most of these prime pieces have been secreted away. Their owners know what they have and they now have have zero interest it giving it up.
Sure you can still find the far from prime 996 Turbo units... the Tips, the high mileage cars, the past damaged, the questionably modified, the driven hard and put away wet cars, and of course the Cabs, but even those cars often come with surprisingly high price points.
If you are a 'Thinking Man', a well versed 911 enthusiast you'll know exactly what you want and which 911 Turbo you should be investing in at this moment in time. You won't get rich by buying this 996 Turbo, but that said you won't go broke either. If appropriately maintained and respectfully enjoyed we see nothing in the foreseeable future that will negatively impact on the current values of the 996 Turbo cars,. Further we sense that it's early identification as a true 'Future Classic' provides hints as to what the next decade may hold for what is without much doubt a 'Best of Breed' automotive treasure.
The original USD List on this particular 996 Turbo was $119,195 USD, with options back in 2002, which today, taking inflation into account, makes it a $178,000 USD car (2002-2021). When expressed, with current exchange rates, in CAD, this car had an original cost of $215,000 CAD. which is directly comparable to what a new 2021 Porsche Turbo (with options) will cost you today in Canada.
It is totally up to you, but from my perspective it is tough to ignore the realities... knowing full well that value deprecation over the years on a New $215k CAD Turbo will sap over 60% of your initial investment right out of your pockets. Alternately this super nice Near Classic 911 Turbo can be had at approximately 39% of it's original value.
Best yet not only is this strong performing 996 Turbo near 1/3rd the price of a new one, more importantly this beautiful pre-owned Turbo is now in an appreciating, not depreciating phase making your initial investment far more secure.
Mezger's 996 Twin Turbo 3.6L - the heart of the beast!
If you have been following the sports car market through the proceeding 15 - 20 years you'll be well aware of the slow, but steady move, away from the traditional Three Pedal Manual to various forms of Automated Shifting. Everyone was doing it, with Porsche enthusiasts being one of the last group to surrender, but with the introduction of the Tiptronic in the 996 Turbo, and then the Automated Dual Clutch PDK in the 2009/997.2 cars many 911 buyers took the bait and they purchased them in droves. As time has moved on fewer and fewer 911s made it out of the factory with a Manual Box, resulting in the manual equipped production accounting for an increasingly minuscule percentage of the modern era 911 market.
All said there is nothing wrong with a PDK 911 or for that matter the earlier Tiptronic equipped 911s, especially in it's Turbo guise, but it is simply not a Manual and although some may believe the purported gains offered by these Auto Box 911s: ease of use, especially in traffic and a slight 0-60 performance advantage, make sense, it is what is actually lost from the mix that the traditional sports car enthusiast cannot let go of! For many serious enthusiasts it is only a manual transmission equipped 911 that provides them that 'uniquely direct' connection to the car, the required concentrated effort to remain in charge and involved in the drive, while being actively engaged and in direct control over every aspect of the cars performance.
Manual Transmission 911 Turbo cars are as near to pure analogue as any piece of automotive technology can be in the modern era, and this fast growing resurgence in the desirability of driver involvement cannot be ignored.
Real enthusiast know and rightly fear that automation is quickly knocking on the door of near every aspect of driving, and many suspect that it will not be too much longer before the automotive digital nannies, built into the modern era automobile, start to slowly remove all operational engagement, leaving the driver little more than just another unaware passenger. Hence the rediscovery of interest and in turn the heightened desirability of the traditional manual transmission sports cars.
Today near every sports car brand Ferrari, Lamborghini and of course Porsches to name but a few, are experiencing a significant 'Manual Premium' and we have no doubt the Manual 996 Turbo will continue to follow that market trend.
This car is on offer direct from it's private owner Nadim, who has the vehicle in his personal possession, locked securing away and protected from the elements at his Toronto Area home. Nahim holds a clear & clean title/registration, ready for transfer to the new owner.
We have known Nadim for over three years now, having first come to us on a referral from a former client, another multiple 911 owner. At the time Nadim was the long term owner of a, quite special, air cooled, 1987 Porsche Carrera, a car that he had kept for over 20 years, but what he really wanted was a 'Manual' 996 Turbo Coupe!
Our hunt for Nadim's Turbo went long as the 'Right' piece could not, at the time, be found. Nadim was quite specific about what he wanted and didn't want, and his standards were very high with no interest in anything, but one of the best. It took some time, but three months into the hunt we hit upon a nice one... the 996 Turbo you have available to you today!
Freshly traded in direct to Porsche Columbus, and it ticked all of the right boxes. Pristine History Car, Virtually All Original, Never Modified, Low Mileage, Impressive Cosmetic Condition, still wearing it's original factory paintwork, and well maintained with the Service History available for review. To add icing on the cake the car had undergone a full inspection at Porsche Columbus including a fresh DME Report and they had also completed a fresh service at a cost of $3685. USD to prepare the car for sale.
They completed a Yearly Service along with fresh oil & filter, rear spoiler lift motor repairs, a new headlight switch, and four new Michelin Tires were installed.
Painful for Nadim was the reality that he had to let go of his long treasured 87 Carrera and after a bit of a combined effort to find the right buyer for this lovely air cooled, one of our site watcher stepped up to the plate. A deal on the Classic Carrera was done and Nadim now had room in the garage for his new love interest, his prized 996 Turbo.
Once the Turbo arrived, Nadim was quick to fall for it's charms and although he is a strong proponent of the 'Love What You Drive' lifestyle, he like many enthusiasts today, has had trouble finding the time to fully enjoy his treasured possession. Then along came, Covid, the restrictions, and with it a change in life's focus for Nadim. Nadim now finds himself at a crossroad he couldn't foresee and he has made the difficult decision to pass on his dream car, this beautiful 996 Turbo, to it's next loving caretaker.
The car remains in the condition in which it was sourced back in June 2018, Nadim has added just 2000 km during his ownership period and has had the car maintained with the Toronto Porsche Pro's at GTEK, the same shop that had maintained his Porsche Carrera for decades before it's sale.
The car presents impressively throughout with one small flaw being a stone chip on the passenger's side front hood. The chip was present at the time of Nadim's purchase and like the Porsche Dealer, Nadim decided it was best to not refinish the hood on an 'Original Paint' car. Review the Image attached.
Mechanically and Electrically the car has no known issues.
