Much has been said, and even more has been written about the Porsche 911 and the marvelous way in which this unique breed of German Automotive Nirvana has impacted upon the automotive enthusiasts across the globe. The Porsche 911 has for decades stood near the pinnacle of desirability, and almost every auto enthusiasts has the ownership of a Porsche 911 close by the top of their personal wish list,.
That said, the good people that build Porsche Cars well know that if there is any one feature that adds to near any Porsche Enthusiast's base desire, it is a Porsche 911 with a Bulbous Backside! Subsequently, Porsche has, since the dawn of the original 911 G Series Turbo Look of the 80s, ensured that it built a special Wide Body 911 variant for each successive series of 911s. Those voluptuous wide hip 911s have had buyers time and again happily lined up to pay a hefty premium to get their hands on a fat assed 911s.
The Wide Body (Turbo Look) 911 thing is a tried and true bit of Porsche marketing magic and once again in 2002 Porsche blessed the enthusiast world with yet another Wide Body, the 996 Carrera 4S. Derived directly from it's already uber successful 996 Turbo, these C4S cars share near every component found on the Turbo cars, with the exception of the Turbo Charged Engine.
To the eye, and on the road the 996 C4S presents itself as a Flat Back - Turbo 911, with which it shares it muscular stance, somewhat distantly similar to a Base 996 Carrera and yet so vastly different!
That said the 996 C4S is so much more than simply a Turbo Look Alike as beyond the wide body panels and bumper covers the C4S also shares the Turbo's Chassis, Suspension, All Wheels Drive System, Brakes and Wheels (Width & Look). All of these shared components adds dynamic abilities and performance attributes not found on the Base 911. Hence, although the C4S shares it's engine with the other naturally aspirated 3.6L Carreras from this era the C4S has an enhanced capability to put the Carrera engine's 320hp to the pavement. No matter the road, no matter the weather the C4S has a unique ability to get you down near any road at speed.
Motor Trend in it's 2002 Review may have said it all best...
“Driving a new Carrera 4S quenches an enthusiast’s thirst like nothing else can. It is a sports car, a supercar in every respect, yet it’s also a perfectly practical car for all those days and nights when you’re not tearing through the mountains. In the mountains, or on the way to work, it ravenously consumes the visible landscape at an alarming rate, as if by the mouthful. You just can’t get enough.”
The 996 C4S has been seen as something special from the days of it's initial introduction and it's status amongst enthusiasts continues to be burnished as it continues its upmarket trajectory, tied inextricably to the rising values of its stable mate, and look alike, the market darling 996 Turbo.
Now if you have never taken a sip of the Porsche's 'Kool-Aid' we understand that you may still simply not get the sense of lust and desire that 911s hold over the marketplace, but we want to warn you, as one long look at the broad back end of a sensuous 996 C4S Coupe may just take you down the road into the dark side of automotive desire.
Walter's 996 C4S - Porsche Got It Just Right!
As you may or may not be aware we at SportsCarLocate have been chasing Porsche cars on behalf of our clients for over a decade now, and subsequently we have successfully located 911s from every era including the 996 models. Somewhat surprisingly although 996 era cars were produced in large numbers over the years (1999-2005), for quite some time now, we have observed just how the market's attitude towards the 996 is changing as these cars begin to mature. The availability of good, purchase worthy 996 cars is becoming rarer by the day. as although there may be many 996s out on the road and in the marketplace, upon closer investigation so few of these cars are ones that we would now want to buy for ourselves or consider recommending to a client.
Now that said, the 996 C4S cars are a very different beast to the base cars as these C4S Coupe were only produced from 2002-2005 with production numbers virtually on par with those of the 996 Turbo! All said just 10% of all Porsche 996/911s produced left the factory as Carrera 4S Coupes and even fewer were constructed with the now market preferred ' 6 Speed Manual' as many new buyers fell under the spell of the Tiptronic (automatic) transmission. The C4S Coupe much like the 996 Turbo cars, although not super rare, have seen their market values appreciating of late. Although both of these models still remain acquirable it is now all about finding a good one, a worthy conquest in the right condition, with the right mileage... one that can continue to be enjoyed for years to come, yet still remain an asset worthy of future value appreciation.. that my readers is the tough part!
Both local and global demand for these unique Porsche C4S cars remains very strong, and we see no reason for that to change in the years to come, as market interest in the thrill inducing, uniquely special driving experience that these cars provide would appear to be on the rise, creating what we anticipate as an unquenchable desire amongst a growing list of knowing enthusiasts. The 996 C4S Coupes are special and the Porsche Enthusiast across the globe know it!
Much like Porsche's 996 Turbo the C4S Coupe is undeniably a feast for the eyes and a sonorous blessing for the ears, but far more than that, it is to my mind a true sanctuary for any enthusiast's soul. Each outing in a C4S can swiftly turn a simple trip to the market into a life affirming wave of bliss.
Yes, the 996 C4S has proven itself to be somewhat of a reliable place to store your Automotive Investment Fun/Funds, no massive gains, but also in recent years, if the car has been properly cared for, little in the way of value loss either. All this and the potential for some upside in the not too distant future. A rarely found Win/Win Sports Car!
If like many of my clients you happen to be seeking automotive ownership that is far more about making an investment in personal joy, than it is about making money, while yet achieving automotive bliss, without incurring significant depreciative losses... the 996 C4S may prove itself to be just right for you.

Download PDFThis car is on offer from it's private owner Walter M., an enthusiast, for near anything automotive, having owned a broad cross section of fun rides over the decades, from American Muscle, Classic Trucks to Euro Sports in addition to a vast array of Motor Bikes. Walter tends to be a taster not a keeper and with the exception of his 66 Mustang 'Driver' and his 'Keeper' Classic C10 Chevy Pickup, Walter tends to buy, taste, and enjoy automotive fruits one at a time before cycling onto his next conquest.
Walter came to his lust for all things automotive by way of his Grandfather who for multiple past decades was 'The Man' in Walter's Texas Community. if you were looking to buy a car or truck, The Man was the guy you spoke to as he ran the local GM Franchise. The automotive enthusiast gene is deeply engrained in Walter's DNA and like many of us it would seem that he simply wants to taste them all!
This fabulous 996 C4S Coupe is one of those cars that Walter just had to taste. Having never owned a Porsche he came to us at SportsCarLocate determined to find a 911 worthy of a spot in his burgeoning collection. Walter was in fact a referral to us at SCL via his brother, who had earlier successfully sourced his stunning 997.2 Carrera Cabriolet through us a year or so prior.
Walter wanted something a little different, something a little more special and like so many enthusiasts he fell for the Porsches with that distinctive wide body look,. It didn't take long for the 996 4S Coupe jump to the front of the pack and the hunt was on. After a careful look around the market and a few 'close, but no cigar' misses we got word of a fresh 996 Carrera 4S acquisition by a authorized Porsche Dealer in Alabama. Information and imaging was as yet non existent so we jumped over the other lookers in the market and reached out to the dealer immediately to learn more.
Lucky for all involved we happened upon a willing sales rep at Porsche Birmingham, one happy to work with us on getting all we needed to allow our client Walter to review and determine if this was the right C4S for him. Documents were shared, Past History was secured, images inside, outside and underneath were obtained and dealer commitments were made. Hence the decision to move forward on the purchase of the car came quickly.
Once the dealer had completed their Full Service (Four New Michelin Tires, Front Brakes, Rotors Pads Sensors - Hood Shocks, Oil & Filers, New Fuel Door Release, New Coffee Holder etc.) along with a full Cosmetic Prep, Walter flew in to pickup the car. It was love at first sight, followed by a glorious drive through the countryside to his home in Texas. Since his purchase Walter has driven the car sparingly, mostly local outings combined with enjoying the Texas Hill Country at speed when the opportunity arises. The car has been kept in a secure, temperature controlled garage away from the sun and the summer heat and comes complete with a just completed full service at the locally favored, Porsche focused garage, including: Oil/filter, cabin & air filter, new belt drive, new left window regulator and ignition lock assembly all replaced due to wear not component breakdown. The car is dry with no fluid leaks and has no known needs.
Walter is one of those rare owners that we all hope to find, when it comes time to buy a pre loved car.
This C4S has a Pristine Car Fax History with no noted Accidents or damage repair and therefore is still wearing what is believed to be most, if not all, of it's Original Factory Paint. and as is clearly evident in the images, beautiful the paintwork is!
This is one of the few, now surprisingly rare, 996 C4S 'Manual' Coupes that remain virtually factory original, just as it was delivered by Porsche to it's first owner. Wonderfully to my mind, as this C4S has not been toyed with, and all of its original factory equipment is in place - no silly modifications on this beauty. And in the end, with all Porsches, originality is ultimately where the value lies!
The car was originally delivered to it's first owner in the State of Alabama where it resided in Madison AL from Feb. 2002 until late 2021 when Porsche Birmingham in Irondale AL acquired the car. Yes, of course this is not a new Porsche and upon very close inspection some minuet flaws in the original paintwork, along with some light scuffs on the Sport Seat backs and glove box cover, can be found. All told with just 39,780 original miles on the odometer and a long history, of a life well lived, in the southern U.S., while in the hands of just a few caring owners, this C4S stands head and shoulders above the crowd of similar vintage Porsche cars.
Undeniably a very well preserved example, which provides further evidence that the car was clearly treated with respect from new and most likely always garage kept, away from any harmful climatic conditions.
This car is currently with Walter, garaged and cloistered away from the elements, under cover. This is a car that has been enjoyed since new, by a limited few, driven sparingly, yet never left ignored. Not every 996 received the kind of respect that this C4S has had throughout its life, and the difference between a sheltered, yet active example, and one that was overused, abused or ignored is very telling.
Our V-Consign program provides enthusiast owners a unique platform to offer their automotive treasures for sale direct to legitimate buyers, without investing the endless hours. inviting the significant risks and enduring many annoyances normally associated with a private party vehicle sales.
If you have been on the hunt, you'll know that there is a supply shortage of these high quality, low mileage 996 C4S 'Manual' Coupes in the current market. Interest in this unique model remains extremely strong and we see significant potential for not just continued interest, but increased market demand in the years to come.
When you do look around the market you soon realize that very few of these cars have made it this far in the overall impressive, well sorted, condition that you will find this one to be. This car's current cosmetic condition, factory originality and maintenance have helped it to remain a true object of desire. This is a car that people take notice of and respond to in very positive way... you'll never be lonely at the wheel of this Porsche Carrera 4S.
We recommend that you take the time to look at the various images provided by the seller on this very impressive C4S Coupe, both inside and out, as this is not the norm that you are likely to find when looking at others from this era, with anything approaching this sensible price point. We of course will also be happy to share additional high resolution images or other details that provide further insight into the car's current condition... just ask!
Yes, as all Porsche 911s should be, this car has been regularly exercised with love and respect (not tracked), but it has also clearly been coddled since birth by each and every owner, maintained appropriately and driven with restraint as the mileage accumulated represents just 2000 miles for each year that the car has been on the road.
Unlike some of the extreme low mileage examples available (for far more) this is a C4S that can still be driven and enjoyed by it's next owner, yet also a car likely to retain much of its current value, while it awaits the appreciative forces of the 911 marketplace to catch up, with this already highly desirable model.
We think that Motortrend got it right in their 2002 Review... A Must Read!

Walter's C4S - Start It Up & Take It For A Drive
Is it perfect... well as they say "perfection is in the eye of the beholder", but at 20 years of age and just under 40k miles on the odometer, pure perfection it may not be, but that said, try to find a comparable example any nicer than this, within range of this seller's price point. This is a truly special example, an exceedingly well preserved original that we believe will not just thrill and impress it's next owner, but excite all those that it passes by.
We have been professionally chasing down all manner of 911s, on behalf of our rightfully picky clients, for going on 14 years now, and we feel very comfortable here in reporting that this is an extremely fine 'High Quality Keeper' that can still be driven and enjoyed. We are without doubt that this C4S will prove itself to be a real find for any knowledgeable Porsche Enthusiast.
As perfectly imperfect as this or any pre-owned Porsche may be, this Car remains Undeniably Perfect for what Porsche designed this 911 to be... 'The Ultimate Driver'
As currently priced by the seller, this 996 C4S 'Manual" Coupe certainly represents what we see as more than fair value in today's market. Of course we welcome your comparisons, in fact we want you to review and compare this against any and all of the other Carrera 4S Coupes from this era. We are confident that when you look at all of the key factors of Neo-Classic 911 Values - originality, past history, accumulated mileage, current actual condition and this car's up to date maintenance... you will fully understand the value add being offered by the seller.
Buyer's Opportunity... you bet it is! Just try and find another low mileage C4S Manual Coupe with all of these attributes at this price point! So, no matter where you may be located it is time to... sit up, take notice and respond fast!
Trust me when I say that taking many of those other C4S cars up to the standard set by this one, will prove to be a surprisingly costly experience. Unlike so many this is not a 996 Porsche that suffers from the often found... extended neglect and deferred maintenance issues!
Surely one of Porsche's best efforts from the 996 Era this soon to be classic, Fat Assed 911 takes the naturally aspirated, near pure analogue Carrera, to another level.
