End of Era 911 the 991.1s (2012-2015) are the last of the traditional Naturally Aspirated Porsche 911s as all current and future years carry a Turbo Charged Engine with, I understand, the exception of the soon to be released GT3s. Now this fact may not be a biggie for many Porsche novices, but if you happen to be a traditionally focused Porsche Enthusiasts you will understand the nuanced change that impacted the 911 when Porsche introduced the 991.2.
Porsche's recent decision to return the track focused GT3 line to a naturally aspirated engine speaks volumes.
That said what makes this particular 911 desirable, rare and special is the fact that it is one of the very few Manual Transmission cars built through the 991.1 era. Porsche once again also identified the market desirability of the modern era Manual Transmission 911 and introduced the stripped down 911T in 2018 to address the void.
We would like to seriously suggest that this car is a 'Thinking Man's 911T', as virtually near all that is right about the 911T can be found in this 991.1, classic 911 narrow body, light weight (fact is this 991.1 is near 180lbs lighter than the 991.2 based 911T) and although this 991.1 may have 20 hp less than the Turbo Charged 991.2 T it offers its owner a very similar fully involved drive, along with virtually the same performance numbers, with a 0-60 just over 4 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph+. Yet you can buy this car for so much than than you can a 911T.
Changing Times
If you have been following the sports car market through the proceeding 15 - 20 years you'll be well aware of the slow, but steady move, away from the traditional Three Pedal Manual to various forms of Automated Shifting. Everyone was doing it, with Porsche being one of the last to surrender, but with the introduction of the Automated Dual Clutch PDK in the 2009/997.2 cars many 911 buyers took the bait and purchased them in droves. As time has moved on fewer and fewer 911s made it out of the factory with a Manual Box, resulting in the manual equipped 991 production accounting for a minuscule percentage of the 911 market. Although actual production numbers have not yet been made available it is believed that significantly well under 10% of these naturally aspirated 991.1s were delivered with a manual transmission.
All said there is nothing wrong with a PDK 911, but it is simply not a Manual and although some may believe the purported gains the PDK offers: ease of use, especially in traffic and a slight 0-60 performance advantage, make sense, it is what is actually lost with the PDK that the traditional sports car enthusiast cannot let go of! For many serious enthusiasts it is only a manual equipped transmission 911 that provides them that 'uniquely manual' connection to the car, the required concentrated effort to remain in charge and involved in the drive, while being actively engaged and in direct control over every aspect of the cars performance.
These Manual Transmission, Naturally Aspirated 991.1 cars are the last of a breed - as near to pure analogue as any piece of automotive technology can be in the modern era!
Real enthusiast know and rightly fear that automation is quickly knocking on the door of near every aspect of driving, and many suspect that it will not be too much longer before the automotive digital nannies, built into the modern era automobile, start to slowly remove all operational engagement, leaving the driver little more than just another unaware passenger. Hence the newfound resurgence of interest and in turn the heightened desirability of the traditional manual transmission sports cars.
Today near every sports car brand Ferrari, Lamborghini and of course pre 991 Porsches to name but a few, in the pre-owned market, come with a significant 'Manual Premium' and we have no doubt the Manual 991.1s will soon be following that trend.
